Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

Gelco Chimney Cap Installation: The Dallas Owner’s Guide

If you’ve got a Gelco chimney cap that’s rusted through, blown off in a North Texas storm, or started letting rain pour down the flue, here’s the straight answer: we stock Gelco-compatible caps and handle installation across Dallas, with most jobs running $385 to $720 installed, parts and labor included. We’re not affiliated with Gelco, but we’ve installed enough of their caps to know exactly which models fit which flues without guesswork. You’ll typically notice the problem after a heavy rain when you hear dripping inside the firebox, or when a cap that looked fine last season is suddenly leaning at a 30-degree angle.

Which Gelco Models This Applies To

Gelco makes several cap lines, and the wrong one won’t seal a Dallas chimney correctly. The most common residential caps we swap out are the Gelco stainless steel multi-flue models, which come in standard widths from 8 inches up to 18 inches, plus custom sizes for irregular brick patterns. The single-flue gel-coated caps (that’s the “Gelco” name, by the way, not a gel finish) mount directly to round or square clay flue tiles. Here’s the gotcha: you need to measure the outside diameter of your flue tile, not the inside opening. We regularly see Dallas homeowners order a 13×13 cap for a tile that actually measures 13×18 on the outside, and the cap won’t seat. On multi-flue chimneys, you also need the cap to span both tiles with enough overhang or rain just channels straight down. For OEM versus aftermarket, Gelco’s stainless caps hold up well for the price, but if your cap is the older galvanized version that’s now rusting, a stainless replacement from the current Gelco line generally outperforms a cheap aftermarket equivalent. We keep the most-requested Gelco sizes on the truck and can order uncommon dimensions same-week through our supplier network.

Signs Your Gelco Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing

  • Water in the firebox after rain. The cap’s mesh screen or lid has rusted through, or the mounting legs have shifted and created a gap where the cap meets the crown. This is the most common failure we see in Dallas, especially on east-facing chimneys that take full weather exposure.
  • Visible rust streaks on the crown or flue tile. Galvanized cap bodies shed their zinc coating after 5 to 8 years in North Texas humidity, and the rust stains the masonry. Unless addressed, that rust will transfer to the tile and crown surface.
  • Cap leaning or rattling. High winds and hail, which Dallas gets plenty of, loosen the rebar or anchor bolts holding the cap legs. A leaning cap still blocks some rain, but it’s a single storm away from ending up in the gutter.
  • Birds or squirrels in the chimney. If the mesh screen has a puncture or has torn away from the frame, animals treat the flue as a ready-made nesting box. That’s a fire risk and a direct path to blockage.
  • Debris collecting in the firebox. Cracked or missing chimney caps allow leaves, twigs, and shingle grit to fall in, especially on chimneys below mature oak branches like the ones we see through Preston Hollow and Lakewood.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For a standard single-flue Gelco stainless cap on a one-story Dallas home, an installed replacement typically falls between $385 and $520. Larger multi-flue caps or chimneys that need two-story ladder access or a steep roof harness run $550 to $720. Every quote is a written number: parts listed separately from labor, the cap size and material called out, and the total handed to you before we climb. That’s not a courtesy: it’s how Flint Chimney Sweep runs under The Garrison Standard. The written estimate also includes any re-anchoring into the masonry crown and a check of the existing crown surface, because a new cap on a crumbling crown just moves the leak. If the Gelco cap we install fails within one year, the repair is covered, and we come back at no charge. That’s the 365-Day Done Right Promise, not a warranty brochure line.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s a real difference between inspecting a cap and swapping one. From the ground, you can see rust, a dramatic lean, or a missing lid. Ladder work on a Dallas roof is where this stops being a weekend project. Chimney cap installation means working at height, often on a pitch that’s steep enough to make the footing unpredictable, and setting anchor bolts into a masonry crown without cracking the tile underneath. The danger is not theoretical: one wrong step on a shingle roof or one cracked flue tile means a bigger bill than the installation would have cost. If you want to check the cap from the roofline, go ahead: but for actually removing the old cap and seating a new one, call (361) 492-4099. Hank Delano has been running this crew long enough to know that the view from the ground and the condition at the crown are rarely the same picture.
