Famco Damper Repair: The Dallas Owner’s Guide
We stock and install Famco-compatible damper repair parts across Dallas, with most replacements running $275 to $650 installed depending on the damper size and what failed. For most Dallas homes, we can complete a Famco damper swap in under two hours once we’re on site. The way owners usually find us is pretty consistent: they reach for the damper handle on the first cold evening in November, and the plate either won’t hold open, won’t seal shut, or the handle itself spins free with no resistance at all.
What that mechanical failure tells us is that something in the linkage, the pivot pins, or the damper plate itself has given out. Famco builds solid dampers, but Dallas heat and the dry air that comes with it are rough on cast iron and steel parts. Metal expands and contracts through our hundred-degree summers, and those cycles eventually wear down pivot points. Most Famco dampers we see in Dallas homes are original to the house, meaning they’ve been through fifteen to thirty years of seasonal swings.
Which Famco Models This Applies To
Famco’s residential damper line breaks down into a few recognizable groups, and the repair path differs for each. The common ones in Dallas are the standard throat dampers with a cast-iron frame and a steel plate, plus the top-sealing models that mount at the flue opening instead of the firebox throat. The top-sealing units use a cable-and-pulley system that fails differently than the simpler pivot dampers.
The fastest way to identify your Famco damper is to look for the model stamp on the frame or the handle assembly. It’s usually a series of letters and numbers, something like an FDC or FD series mark. If the stamp is worn off, we measure the throat opening (length and width, in inches) and match it against Famco’s dimensional chart. Here’s the gotcha that trips up a lot of Dallas owners: Famco’s “standard” throat sizes don’t map cleanly to modern firebox dimensions. A 36-inch firebox often takes a damper that’s rated at 34 inches, and grabbing the obvious size at a big-box store leaves you with a damper that binds against the masonry. We match against the actual opening, not the firebox face.
On the OEM-versus-aftermarket question: Famco still manufacturers replacement assemblies, and for pivot-style dampers, OEM is worth the small premium because the casting thickness and pin tolerances are consistent. For top-sealing models, quality aftermarket cable assemblies are often better than the original design, since the newer cable coatings hold up better against heat. We’ll quote both options and tell you which we’d put in our own fireplace. We also carry parts for DuraFlex, HeatShield, and Gelco systems, but Famco damper work is its own skill set, and our techs know the quirks of these specific assemblies.

Signs Your Famco Damper Repair Is Failing
- Handle spins with no resistance. The cotter pin or set screw connecting the handle to the damper shaft has sheared off or backed out. The damper plate is no longer connected to the controls, which means it’s stuck wherever it was when the connection broke.
- Damper won’t stay open. On pivot dampers, the friction adjustment has worn smooth. The damper opens but slowly drops closed on its own, which is a real problem when you’re trying to light a fire.
- Damper won’t seal fully closed. Years of heat have warped the plate or the frame. A damper that leaks when closed sends conditioned air up the chimney in August and cold air down into the living room in January.
- Visible rust through the plate. Moisture from combustion plus Dallas humidity cycles has eaten through the steel. A rusted-through plate can’t be patched; it’s a replacement job.
- Cable is frayed or snapped (top-sealing models). The cable that lifts and drops the sealing plate has worn through or broken. If you hear a snap and the handle goes loose, that’s the cable letting go.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In Dallas, a straightforward Famco pivot damper replacement with a standard OEM part typically runs $275 to $450 installed. Top-sealing models run higher, usually $475 to $650 installed, because the part costs more and the cable routing takes more time to set correctly. If the frame itself has shifted or the throat masonry needs minor chipping to seat the new damper properly, that can push the job toward the top of the range.
Your written price includes the part, all on-site labor, debris cleanup, and verification that the damper opens and seals correctly before we leave. Every Famco damper repair we do carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise. If the damper fails within a year of the install date, we return at no charge and make it right. No prorating, no argument. You’ll see the price in writing before any work starts, and that’s the number you’ll pay.
DIY or Call Us?
What you can safely check yourself: look for the model stamp, measure the throat opening, and take a photo of the damper from inside the firebox. That information helps us bring the right part on the first trip. What goes wrong with DIY: getting a replacement damper seated correctly requires working inside the firebox, and a damper that’s poorly fitted can leave your chimney drafting incorrectly. That’s not a performance issue; it’s a carbon monoxide risk. Hank Delano will tell you straight: “If the flue’s clear, I’ll tell you. If it’s not, I’ll show you exactly why.” A damper that isn’t sealing or opening correctly changes how your chimney drafts, and we’d rather set that right than have a homeowner guess at it.
If you want to try the swap yourself, we won’t stop you, but we’ve seen enough DIY Famco installs where the damper binds against the frame and the homeowner can’t get the fire lit. We’ll match the part for you and install it correctly the first time. Call (361) 492-4099 for a free estimate.
FAQs
Most Famco pivot dampers in Dallas last 15 to 30 years, with top-sealing models typically lasting 10 to 20 years. The dry heat speeds up metal fatigue and warps plates faster than more humid climates. If your damper is original to a house built before 2005, it’s living on borrowed time. Call (361) 492-4099 and we’ll give you an honest read on what you’ve got.
Some failures can be repaired: a sheared cotter pin, a loose set screw, or a worn friction adjustment on a pivot damper are all fixable without a full swap. But once the plate is warped, rusted through, or the frame is cracked, repair isn’t worth the money and replacement is the right call. We’ll tell you which situation you’re in before you spend a dollar.
Most Famco damper replacements in Dallas run under two hours from setup to cleanup. Top-sealing models take closer to three hours because the cable routing and seal testing add steps we won’t rush.
We keep common pivots, handle assemblies, cables, and plates for the most common Famco sizes on our trucks. For odd sizes or specialized models, we order the part and schedule the install once it arrives, usually within a week. Call (361) 492-4099 with your model number and we’ll tell you if we have it on hand today.
If your Famco damper is acting up, skip the guesswork. Call Flint Chimney Co Dallas at (361) 492-4099 and we’ll match the part, give you a written price, and stand behind the work for a full year. That’s The Garrison Standard, and it applies to every damper we touch in Dallas.
