Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
HeatShield Crown Repair: The Dallas Owner’s Guide
HeatShield crown repair in Dallas typically runs $350 to $700 installed, depending on how much of the crown coat has separated and whether the underlying concrete needs prep work first. We stock HeatShield’s Cerfractory sealant on our trucks, so most crown repairs we handle are done in a single visit. You usually find out this part failed the hard way: a water stain appears on the ceiling near the fireplace, or a Dallas downpour leaves a puddle in the firebox. Sometimes it’s the flaky white mineral deposits along the crown’s edge that tip you off.
Crowns fail here more than homeowners expect because Dallas gets exactly the weather that punishes them: intense summer heat that expands the concrete, then sudden fall rain that contracts it. Hairline cracks form, water gets in, and the freeze-thaw cycle we get a few times each winter works those cracks wide open. HeatShield’s crown coat is a good product. But it’s a coating, not a structural fix, and once it separates from the concrete below, it stops shedding water the way it should.
If the flue’s clear, I’ll tell you. If it’s not, I’ll show you exactly why.
Which HeatShield Models This Applies To
HeatShield is not a model-based product line, and that trips up a lot of Dallas homeowners trying to match parts. HeatShield makes two products we work with most: the CeCure crown coat (a brushable, fiber-reinforced sealant for the crown’s top surface) and the joint repair sealant used where the crown meets the flue tile. If your chimney was treated with HeatShield’s crown coating at any point within the last 5 to 10 years, this page applies to you.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha: HeatShield’s crown coat bonds well to bare concrete but not to silicone, old elastomeric paint, or sealants a previous company may have slapped on. If we show up and find the crown was previously coated with something else, that layer has to come off first, or the new HeatShield coat will peel within a season. That prep work is the most common reason a Dallas crown repair quote lands higher than the ballpark number.
OEM versus aftermarket isn’t really the decision here. HeatShield is a specialty product with no true aftermarket equivalent that matches its fiber-reinforced formula. We use the real thing on HeatShield repairs. For crown prep or structural patching before coating, we also stock DuraFlex and Gelco products, depending on what the crown’s condition calls for.
Flint Chimney Co Dallas is an independent chimney service company, not affiliated with HeatShield. We specify their materials because they hold up in North Texas weather.

Signs Your HeatShield Crown Repair Is Failing
- Water in the firebox after rain. The most direct signal. The crown’s job is to shed water away from the flue. When the coat separates, water runs down the flue tile and into the firebox, often carrying soot stains with it.
- Efflorescence on the interior firebrick. That white, chalky mineral residue isn’t mold. It’s what’s left when water migrates through masonry, dissolves salts, and evaporates. It tells you water has been getting past the crown for a while.
- Flaking or peeling along the crown’s edge. HeatShield’s CeCure coat should look like a continuous, slightly textured gray surface. When it starts curling up at the edges like old paint, the bond has failed and water is working underneath.
- Damp drywall or stains on the ceiling near the chimney. This means water is not just running down the flue, it’s wicking sideways into the framing. By the time a stain shows, the crown has been failing for at least a season.
- Spalling on the crown’s concrete base. Small chunks of concrete missing or crumbling at the crown’s edge. If the structural crown is spalling, a recoat alone won’t fix it. The damaged concrete needs patching before any HeatShield product goes on.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In Dallas, a HeatShield crown repair with proper prep runs $350 to $700 installed. That covers removing any loose or failed coating, cleaning the crown surface, patching minor concrete spalling, and applying a full HeatShield CeCure coat. If the crown’s concrete base is badly deteriorated, that repair price goes up because we’re doing masonry work first, not just a recoat.
Every quote you get from us is written before any work starts. The number we hand you is the number on the invoice. No add-ons discovered halfway through, no “while we’re in there” upsells. And every crown repair carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the coating fails within one full year, we return and fix it at no charge. That’s in writing, on every job.
The parts cost on a crown coat is modest compared to the labor. Prep is where the time goes. A crown that’s flaking badly needs a grinder pass to profile the surface and give the new coat something to bite into. We’d rather charge you for correct prep once than recoat it for free next year under warranty.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely check the crown yourself from the ground with binoculars: look for gaps, flaking edges, or standing water. You should not get on a roof to do the repair itself. A crown repair means working at height on a sloped surface while handling a grinder and a brushable sealant. The fall risk is real, and the product won’t bond right if the surface prep is skipped or rushed. We see DIY crown coats in Dallas all the time, and most of them peel within a year because the old coating wasn’t removed first.
If the flue’s clear, we’ll tell you. If it’s not, we’ll show you exactly why. That goes for the crown too. We’ll photograph what we find and show you the damage before we ever recommend a repair, and if the crown can wait a season, Hank Delano will say so plainly. If you’re seeing signs of crown failure and want a straight answer on what it’ll take to fix it, call (361) 492-4099 for a free estimate.
FAQs
A properly prepped HeatShield crown coat lasts 8 to 12 years in the Dallas climate, sometimes longer on a crown that stays fully shaded. The variable is prep: a coat put over a poorly prepared surface will separate within 2 to 3 seasons. Call (361) 492-4099 if you want us to inspect yours and tell you how much life is left in it.
Yes, and in most cases that’s exactly what we do. If the coating is failing in isolated areas but the underlying concrete crown is sound, we remove the loose material, prep the surface, and apply fresh HeatShield CeCure to the affected areas. Full recoat is only necessary when the separation covers most of the crown.
A standard HeatShield crown repair in Dallas takes 4 to 6 hours on site, including prep, application, and cure inspection. We usually complete it in a single visit, though the coat needs dry weather for at least 24 hours after application. We schedule around the forecast.
Yes. We keep HeatShield CeCure crown coat and joint sealant on our trucks, along with DuraFlex and Gelco products for related chimney work. That means most crown repairs don’t require a second visit for parts.
