Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
DuraFlex Damper Repair: The Dallas Owner’s Guide
If your DuraFlex damper won’t open, won’t close, or makes a scraping sound when you try, we can replace the failed component, typically the damper blade, hinge pin, or cable assembly. Installed DuraFlex-compatible damper repair in Dallas runs between $285 and $540 depending on whether we’re replacing just the cable or the entire damper frame. Most repairs finish in under two hours, and we carry common DuraFlex replacement parts on the truck so there’s no second appointment waiting on a shipment.
Usually, you find out the damper failed the moment you try to build a fire. The handle turns without resistance, the cable pulls loose, or the damper plate sits crooked in the throat and won’t seat. Sometimes it’s the opposite problem: the damper is stuck open and you can feel cold air pouring down the chimney every time the wind picks up.
Which DuraFlex Models This Applies To
DuraFlex makes two broad damper lines we see regularly in Dallas homes: the cast-iron throat dampers common in the 1970s through early 2000s, and the more recent stainless steel chimney-top dampers, which muscle out the old throat damper entirely. The parts are not interchangeable. A throat damper on a DuraFlex system uses a 3/8-inch keyhole rod and a cast plate sized to the flue tile, while the top-mount style depends on a stainless frame, compression gasket, and a pull cable routed through the firebox wall.
Before calling, pop off the firebox floor grate and look up. If you see a cast metal plate with a long rod running through it, you’ll need a throat damper component. If the throat is open and there’s a cable running up the flue, you’ve got a top-sealing damper. The model number won’t be stamped on the damper itself, but the cable housing and handle shape call tell us which series we’re working with. We stock both OEM DuraFlex components and direct-fit aftermarket equivalents; the performance difference on a well-made aftermarket plate is negligible if it’s sized correctly, and we’ll tell you the price of both before you choose.

Signs Your DuraFlex Damper Repair Is Failing
- The handle spins or pulls with no resistance. The cable has either snapped at the clevis or pulled out of the damper plate’s anchor point. This is the most common failure we see on top-mount units after about ten years of use.
- Cold air streams down the flue in winter. The damper plate isn’t seating flush. On top-mount units the compression spring loses tension, and on throat dampers, years of soot and creosote grind the plate edge down until it won’t close fully.
- The damper plate sits crooked in the opening. A hinge pin has worn out of round, or the frame itself has shifted from repeated heating and cooling cycles. Dallas’s wild temperature swings speed this up more than you’d expect.
- You hear metal scraping when you work the handle. The damper cable is grinding against a rough spot in the flue tile or the liner. Left alone, it will eventually saw through and drop the plate.
- The fire is hard to keep lit. A failing damper messes with draft, which is the pressure difference that pulls smoke up the chimney. If the damper can’t be adjusted properly, smoke spills into the room.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In Dallas, expect to pay $285 to $340 for a top-mount damper cable replacement with adjustment, and $420 to $540 for a complete damper plate and frame swap. The spread depends on whether the existing frame can be reused, how much scaling has built up around the mounting surface, and whether we need a taller ladder or different roof access for your particular chimney. We hand you a written price before any tool comes off the truck. That price covers the part, the labor, hauling off the old damper, and a full-year guarantee.
We work with DuraFlex, HeatShield, and Gelco products, and we’ll use the correct brand of replacement for the system you already have. The 365-Day Done Right Promise means if a covered part fails within a year, the second visit is free. No charge, no argument.
DIY or Call Us?
There’s one safe step any owner can do: confirm the damper is actually at fault. Use a flashlight and look up from the firebox. If the plate is missing, seized, or off its track, the part needs replacing. Do not try to dislodge a stuck damper while standing in the firebox, and never attempt to climb onto the roof to inspect a top-mount unit. Damper springs are under enough tension to break fingers, and chimney-top work without fall protection is a fast way to the hospital.

FAQs
Most DuraFlex dampers in Dallas last between 8 and 15 years. Top-mount stainless units usually outlast cast-iron throat dampers by two or three years, but the cable assemblies on both tend to fail first.
We repair before replacing whenever the frame is still sound. A stripped cable, worn hinge pin, or bent handle usually only calls for a part swap, not a full damper replacement. We’ll show you the failed piece and explain exactly what it’ll take to make it right, then put the price in writing before we do anything. Call (361) 492-4099 for an honest assessment.
A cable replacement runs 45 minutes to an hour. A full damper plate and frame swap takes about two hours from ladder-up to trim-back-in-place. You’ll know the time window the day before we arrive.
We keep common DuraFlex damper plates, frames, and cable assemblies on our Dallas trucks. If your exact part isn’t in the truck, we order it and return with a guaranteed install date instead of leaving you guessing. Call (361) 492-4099 for a free estimate today.
